Flower Delivery @ The Altenheim

Posted on Jul 23, 2020

Throwback Thursday: Showing Seniors Love at the Altenheim

Another Throwback Thursday is dedicated to our Flower Delivery Service Project. After a few weeks of planning during our meetings, coordinating with the Senior Care Facility The Deutsches Altenheim in West Roxbury, and finding local businesses who would donate flowers, we were ready.

On Valentine's Day, members of our Rotary club picked up babies breath and carnations, cut stems, tied bows and created 200 beautiful bouquets. We hand delivered them to local seniors to share our love and care on a day that can be difficult for those who have lost their loved ones. We were able to listen to stories, say hello, and spread joy to 200 seniors living at Altenheim on February 29th 2020.

To a New Year

To New Beginnings in 2020: Thank you Dominic and Welcome Adrienne!

Dominic, We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your dedication these last two years as our club president. You have been steadfast in driving our vision of Service above Self forward. As you have said, the club you started with is certainly not the club you ended up with, for a lot of reasons. We are more flexible, proactive, and our community has not faltered even through these unprecedented times mostly because of your wonderful leadership!

It is an exciting time as Dr. Adrienne Ulrich becomes our President for the 2020-2021 Rotary Year!
Your first meeting last week was positive and productive! We are so happy to have you as our new fearless leader and can't wait to work hard and implement our upcoming service projects focusing on supporting our local seniors. Thank you for stepping up to bat in a very odd year to say the least.

Polar Plunge

Posted on Jan 23, 2016

Parkway Rotary members Dominic Rebelo and Uchenna Onyeachom once again plunged into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean in an effort to eradicate Polio.  Last year, they were able to raise over $120,000.  The event took place at Long Beach in Gloucester and was a huge success.

2015 was a significant milestone in making polio history.  There were no new cases of the wild poliovirus in Nigeria.  That means we're down to two endemic countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan.  If Nigeria can go two more years without a new case, we will have a polio free Africa!

All efforts by our partners in this fight are surging forward to eliminate polio everywhere in the year ahead, but its’s not about just delivering the vaccine to the children. The logistical and political challenges are many and costly. Rotary and the World Health Organization, as well as funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other funding partners, are pushing hard to achieve this goal. It will require a huge effort and much more funding to beat out the last cases and to make sure that polio doesn't re-occur in those countries that have been, and will be, certified polio free. If this happens, the globe could be polio free by 2018.

Paul Harris Awards Dinner

Posted by Brendan Szocik on Jun 05, 2014

On Friday evening, June 6th, the Rotary Club of West Roxbury-Roslindale hosted its annual Paul Harris awards dinner.  This year we were honored to present the award to Mary Mulvey Jacobson.  As President of the WRBPA, she works with Deutsches Altenheim and Ethos on the popular "Stand Up For Seniors - Coffee and Conversation with the Candidates" forums so that residents of the German Center and the greater community can hear first hand from candidates running for the public office.  She is also a proud and distinguished graduate of Regis College, where she received a BA in Economics, and has served as Class President for many years.  Mary is also President of the Irish Social Club of Boston, having taken a leadership role in getting the organization reopened and back on its feet.  She is the President of the Board of Directors of Ethos, which provides meals and living assistance to keep Parkway area senior citizens and disabled in their homes for as long as possible.  Mary also serves as vice Chair of the West Roxbury YMCA, serving on the Capital Campaign Committee.  She was a founding Incorporator of the Gardens at Gethsemane in West Roxbury, a non-sectarian cemetery open to all faiths.  She had coordinated the Annual Memorial Day Service for 14 years as well as the First Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony.  For over 25 years, Mary served as Co-State Chair of the Massachusetts Beirut Memorial Committee, honoring the Marines who gave their lives in Lebanon in 1983.  She worked at Boston City Hall for a dozen years as Chief of Staff to then Boston City Councillor Maura Hennigan and remains active, involved and interested in all things political.  She is an elected member of the Ward 19 Democratic Committee.

Casserly House Service Project

Posted by Brendan Szocik

Image

The Rotary Club of West Roxbury/Roslindale chose a new service project for this year and have already begun to see tangible benefits from its efforts. The Club partnered with a local nonprofit called Casserly House. The project had a few goals, including supporting education, growing the local economy, and assisting mothers and children. Since the project began in No-vember, two students have found jobs. (pictured: Dominic Rebelo-West Roxbury / Roslindale Rotary President, Sister Nancy Braceland-Casserly House and Kurt Jacobs – Kurtronics.)

Money raised for the project came directly from the Rotary Club of West Roxbury/Roslindale. The Club applied and won a match-ing grant from Rotary International which funds projects that support humanitarian services in the Rotary District of 7930.

Casserly House is a center for learning, assistance, and caring. It focuses on multiethnic and underserved people in the community. The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph is the primary sponsor of Casserly House, which is located on Stellman Road in the Boston neighborhood of Roslindale. The director of Casserly House is Sister Nancy Braceland. Sr. Braceland is also a past recipi-ent of Rotary’s Paul Harris award given for extraordinary service to the community. Casserly House provides ESL classes to adults in the morning and provides neighborhood children a facility to do their homework after school.

The project had both a fundraising and service component. The funds raised went to update the computer center, which is an inte-gral part of the programs at Casserly House. Due to the age of the technology, many of the computers were unable to perform basic functions, like run Rosetta Stone software. Members of the Club volunteer time each week to working with the students to use computers and improve their English. Students of the center reflect the diversity found in the city of Boston and come from far and wide, including Cuba, Brazil, Vietnam, and El Salvador. They arrive with varied computer experiences. Some have never used a computer before, some have vast experience, but have issues translating to English, and some come from countries with computers, but no internet and so have no skills in accessing and navigating the web.

Since the Rotary became involved, two students of the center have found jobs. One was turned down from a job specifically for not having computer skills. This experience steeled her resolve to get computer training at the Center. She then reapplied at that employer and got the position. To learn more about Casserly House, visit www.casserlyhouse.org.

Suffolk County DA Dan Conley Honored by Rotary

More than 100 friends, family and elected officials came together on April 24, to honor Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley as he received the Rotary Club International Paul Harris Award. Named after the founder of Rotary International, the Paul Harris Award is one of the highest awards in Rotary and is offered to individuals who have made selfless contributions to the community.
Some accomplishments as district attorney include anti-gang legislation, an overhaul of the way police and prosecutors gather and use evidence, and opening Massachusetts' first Family Justice Center. Conley has increased prosecution of financial theft cases and computer-related crimes.
In addition to friends and Conley's family, as well as many elected officials showing support. Guests included City Councilor John Tobin, (who was installed into the West Roxbury~Roslindale Rotary Club as well), City Councilor Rob Consalvo, State Rep. Mike Rush (who also agreed to Join the West Roxbury ~ Roslindale Rotary), Boston City Councilor at-Large Andrew Kenneally, mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty, and Rotary District Governor Thomas Elliot.
Many joked about Conley's appearance on local and national news programs in recent days due to the arrest of Philip Markoff, for the "Craigs List Murder". Conley said he is working hard to honor the memory of the victim. "Part of our job is to inform our public of what has happened," he said. "But the heart of a prosecutor's job is to serve victims like Julissa Brisman." (see photo journal for more pictures)
